Van die Klaskamer tot die Wildtuin | From the Classroom to the Bush

Dit het begin in 1985 agter 'n skoolbord — Geografie en Toerisme aan hoërskole in Pretoria, Durban en Kempton Park. Wessel het nie net die vak onderrig nie; hy het dit geskryf. As hoofouteur van die nasionale FET-handboeksreeks vir Toerisme (Nasou Via Afrika, 2000–2007) het hy die grondslag gelê vir hoe 'n generasie Suid-Afrikaanse leerders toerisme verstaan.

It began in 1985 behind a chalkboard — Geography and Tourism at high schools in Pretoria, Durban and Kempton Park. Wessel didn't just teach the subject; he wrote it. As principal author of the national FET Tourism textbook series (Nasou Via Afrika, 2000–2007), he shaped how a generation of South African learners understand tourism.

Met 'n MA in Geografie (Toerisme-ontwikkeling) van die Universiteit van Pretoria het Wessel die teorie in die praktyk omgesit — op 'n skaal wat min mense ooit bereik. As direkteur van Vuka Project Management Services het hy R266 miljoen se toerisme-infrastruktuur namens SANParke bestuur — van die Kgalagadi tot Mapungubwe, van die Richtersveld tot Addo. Paaie, wilderneskampe, erfenisterreine, gemeenskapslodges — alles gebou in die hart van Suid-Afrika se mooiste wildgebiede.

With an MA in Geography (Tourism Development) from the University of Pretoria, Wessel turned theory into practice — at a scale few ever achieve. As director of Vuka Project Management Services, he managed R266 million in tourism infrastructure on behalf of SANParks — from the Kgalagadi to Mapungubwe, from the Richtersveld to Addo.

'n Leeftyd in die Afrikaanse Bos | A Lifetime in the African Bush

Van Shangana Kulturele Dorp in Hazyview tot Humala River Lodge in die Songimvelo Natuurreservaat — Wessel het lodges gebou, bestuur en laat floreer in van die mees afgeleë hoeke van Suider-Afrika. By Humala het hy 'n 50,000ha reservaat se toerisme van niks af opgebou, 'n 20-bed lodge na 30 beddens uitgebrei, en 'n omset van R5.2 miljoen in 2019/2020 behaal — terwyl hy terselfdertyd stroopery bekamp, gemeenskappe bemagtig en 150km paaie ontwikkel het.

From Shangana Cultural Village in Hazyview to Humala River Lodge in the Songimvelo Nature Reserve — Wessel built, managed and grew lodges in some of the most remote corners of Southern Africa. At Humala, he built a tourism operation from scratch on a 50,000ha reserve, expanded from 20 to 30 beds, and achieved a turnover of R5.2 million — while simultaneously combating poaching, empowering communities and developing 150km of roads.

Somewhere in the African bush, years ago, a family stood beneath an acacia tree and dreamed.
